A Homeless Man Found Jesus and Now He’s Changing Lives

From: Reyna ReynaA listener named John shared his story, and I just knew you had to hear it.
I was going through yet another divorce.
After years of battling addiction, this felt like proof that I was losing. I felt like my life was caving in on me when I suddenly remembered a radio station my sister had told me about for years—89.3 KSBJ.
That night, for the first time, I actually listened.
I’ll never forget driving on Beltway 8, changing the radio dial, and hearing How Great Is Our God by Chris Tomlin. Right there in my car, I wept. I surrendered my life to Jesus. That night, I made a decision—I threw out all my drugs.
But surrendering my life to Jesus didn’t mean everything changed overnight. My marriage still ended. I fell back into addiction. Eventually, I found myself homeless on the streets of Houston.
I didn’t have much, but I did have a small bible. I read it often and I prayed. I was homeless for 7 years. By God’s grace I met a friend, Cindy who regardless of where I was believed in me, but more than that she believed in God.
She encouraged me in my relationship with Jesus and I found a Biblically based in-house facility in Houston and was there for six months of treatment.
That’s where my relationship with Jesus deepened, and I knew—despite everything I had been through—He was calling me to more. God blessed me with a great job. And then, Cindy—my friend who never gave up on me—became my wife.
We have been married for 3 years now and together we run a non-profit called Chat and Chew. The non-profit serves the Galveston County homeless population providing meals, clothes, hygiene essentials, and a warming center during cold weather.
I’ve lived through childhood abuse. I’ve been arrested 48 times. I’ve lived under a bridge for seven years. And yet—here I am. Where God has me now is nothing short of a miracle.
When John shared his story with me all I could think was the lyrics of that Chris Tomlin song, “How Great is Our God!”
"Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands Beginning and the end"
God isn't done with you yet.
You Are Never Too Far Gone
- John thought his mistakes had disqualified him—but God wasn’t done.
- No addiction, failure, or past mistake is too big for God’s grace.
- Even in the darkest places—homeless, broken, and struggling—God was still working.
Nothing is impossible for Him. I don’t know what you might be facing in your life that you think disqualifies you, but I hope John’s story reminds you that there are no limits when you put your life in the hands of Jesus.
Here is one of John’s favorite verses,
“Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.” | 1 Corinthians 1:27
What is God calling you to do? What is that dream so big in your heart that you can’t share it with anyone because it scares you?
Talk to God about it, take steps towards it even when it’s scary, and together let’s see what He does!
Your friend,
Reyna
