The Mirror Check

There are two types of, what I call, the “mirror check.” The quick mirror check helps us quickly address and assess ourselves and see that everything is where it should be. The deep mirror check utilizes magnifying mirrors to help us reckon with micro-attentions.
NO ONE likes the deep mirror check. It brings into view what might be lost on a quick MC.
Granny hairs.
There I said it.
As a youth, I remember seeing these things on the necks of aging women…and now, well, I’m every woman, Chaka Khan.
The deep mirror check is scarily revelatory, but it helps one not become a fuzz-face.
I’m not a proponent of using the magnification of a deep mirror check every time I look into a mirror. A lot of the time a quick check is enough, but it’s beneficial to schedule--semi-regularly--a deep check.
Our bodies are connected to our mind and our heart. If we are checking on outside stuff, the inner parts should NOT go unchecked either. What happens on the inside will impact our outer person: situationally, physically, and spiritually (1 Thess.5:23). The Holy
Spirit is available for those quick checks as well as the deeper ones. Depending on the issue, some take longer to address than others, but all checks are not for our detriment but for our growth!
In Matthew chapter 15 Jesus talks about the stuff that comes out of our mouth being from a place deeper: our hearts. If we have junk in our heart, it will surface. Have I allowed every thought to be filtered through Jesus and held “captive” (2 Cor. 10) so that it can be filled with life and not death? What part of my heart should be observed w/magnification?
The Bible tells us to put on what God has for us through Christ and relates it as “armor” in Ephesians 6:
- Helmet of Salvation: Remember that Jesus Saved us & allow that remembrance to proceed any action taken!
- Breastplate of Righteousness: Guard the heart with God’s Way of doing things and work out of His ability to do right by others—Do not be encumbered with “self.”
- Shod the feet with Peace “Prep”: Lord, where we walk out Your Word for our lives today, will You go before us? Bring Your peace into those places in and through us (Your body) as well!
- Put on the belt of Truth: Belts keep things in place. Truth and Love will keep us in alignment with You!
- The Sword of the Spirit: Ours is a spiritual battle, but the Bible tells us that YOU, Lord, have already won! We bind the enemy with YOUR Word and not our own! We read Your Word—help us be hungry for it--because bread isn’t the only thing that’ll keep us upright!
A quick spiritual check could be a review of what God has done for us. It could be as simple as singing a song!
A deep spiritual check is where God may be asking us to be still and take a longer look at places in our lives that need adjustment.
Will we linger a little longer and ask Him to magnify what isn’t magnifying Him?
It isn’t always easy, but it IS worth it!
