The Night I Shouted at Heaven

The Night I Shouted at Heaven

I was about six months out of college, with two kids and no work.

I thought I was supposed to follow God’s call on my life to a radio ministry that taught me about Jesus—and nothing was happening.

All the while, my college friends were landing jobs left and right.

I was confused, and I was angry.

“God, where are You? Do You see me? I feel like a failure!”

Have you ever shouted at heaven?

It’s not my proudest moment, but yes, I’ve thrown a tantrum or two—or three.

I’m thankful I know a God who can handle me at my best and still holds me at my worst.

In those times, He was near.

Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

A few months later came my first day of work at that radio ministry — KSBJ. I’ve now been serving here for 13 years.

That experience and others, have proven to me who God is. He is good, He is faithful, and in His timing — when I keep my eyes on Him — His will unfolds in my life.

Recently, I found myself in a busy airport feeling overwhelmed. I stood in a long line for coffee, dropped my head, and said a prayer.

A one-word prayer: “Father.”

I’ve been praying that one-word prayer a bit more lately. These days, I guess I’ve realized it’s best to conserve my energy.

For me, it’s the word that says everything I used to yell — but now it’s with surrender instead of fear.

Father.
When I don’t get my way.

Father.
When I don’t understand.

Father.
When it hurts.

Father.
When I’m tired of asking.

Father.
When I don’t know what else to say.

Father.
I trust you.

Father.
Lead the way.

Father.
I love you.

Father.
I surrender.

It’s not giving up. It’s giving in—into the arms of a Father I can count on no matter what things might look like.

If your prayers are messy, whispered through tears, or even just a single word — God hears you.

The Bible says it’s the Holy Spirit who translates our prayers even when we can’t find the words.

Romans 8:26–27 (NLT)

“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.”

I don’t know what you’re walking through in your life.
If you’ve shouted at heaven, there’s no judgment here.

But, friend, please remember:
You have a Father who loves you.
He sees where you are, where you’ve been, and He knows what’s ahead.

If all you have left is the strength to say a one-word prayer, “Father” it’s enough.

With Love,

Your friend,

Reyna Reyna
