A Heart Full of Faith: Prayers for Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale
Posted 2 weeks ago - Dec 6, 2024
From: DeniseIcon. Philanthropist. Sports fan. Entrepreneur. Husband. Dad. These are just a few of the words people use to describe Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale. Yet, if you were to ask him, I bet his favorite title is "child of God."
Jim has often said, "My faith defines me; it’s who I am!"
When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Jim couldn't even get out of his own driveway to go to church. That's when it hit him. He said, “How am I going to let my people drown? It’s as simple as that. I’m not going to let my people drown.” He dispatched Gallery Furniture trucks to rescue people, opened up the furniture store so people could literally LIVE there!
That unwavering faith has guided him through life's challenges, including recent health issues. A few months ago, doctors at the Texas Medical Center treated him for cellulitis in his leg. Now, however, Jim faces a more significant hurdle—his heart.
Jim has been diagnosed with a condition called a Leaky Mitral Valve, a serious issue requiring a four-hour open-heart surgery. This news hits close to home for me because my own dad has the same condition. Thankfully, my dad's was managed through diet, exercise, and medication. Jim’s case is more severe, but if anyone has the courage and determination to overcome such a challenge, it’s him.
When I talk about my dad, I often describe him as an “81-year-old middle school boy.” (If you know him, you understand exactly what I mean!) He’s been my hero since I was a little girl, filling my childhood with priceless memories. Whether it was catching a Cubs game, spending the day at the Museum of Science & Industry, or watching planes at Midway Airport, my dad created moments that made me feel deeply connected to him.
Jim McIngvale is a man who also values connection. You see it in how he runs Gallery Furniture. If you’ve ever walked through the doors, chances are you’ve been greeted by Mack himself with a warm smile and a heartfelt “Welcome to Gallery Furniture!” It feels like stepping into his home, and his presence makes every visit special—especially during the bustling holiday season.
Now, as Jim prepares for this major surgery, it’s our turn to return the love and support he has so generously given to others. At KSBJ, we’re reminded daily of the power of prayer. Jim has been a long-time supporter of KSBJ—not just financially, but through his prayers and volunteer work. Let’s lift him up in prayer as he faces this challenging time.
If Jim has touched your life in some way, consider sending him a card or posting a message on his social media. Yes, he really does read them all! Let’s remind him that he’s not facing this journey alone.
Jim’s faith has carried him through many trials before, and we believe it will sustain him now. As we focus on “Don’t Stop Praying,” let’s join together in faith, asking for healing and strength for Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale—a true icon and child of God. We love you, Mack! We are praying for total healing and restoration, and we are thanking God for you!
