The experiences we go through—both good and bad—shape who we become. I recently sat down with Jamie MacDonald (video below!) to learn more about her story and found out that some of her most formative moments were filled with pain and struggle.

As a teenager, she had a difficult home life and was even kicked out of the house for singing (isn't that wild?!). She spent time living in group homes and couch surfing, eventually finding herself in a lifestyle of drugs and alcohol. 

When she was an adult, Jamie reconnected with her estranged father. She went to visit him and what was meant to be a short visit turned into a four-year stay after his health took a turn for the worse, and she cared for him throughout his last days. 

Through it all, Jamie discovered something powerful: God wasn’t just present in her pain—He was using it to shape her. Music became her way of wrestling with where she’d been and what He was bringing her through.

Her song “Desperate” is a reflection of that journey. It’s for any of us who have faced loss, heartache, and those moments when all we can do is cry out to God for help.
